Myth of the Jigokudani Snow Monkeys

These seemingly natural creatures may actually lead a hidden life beyond the eyes of the ordinary tourist.

Locals believe that, in their home camps beyond the springs, Jigokudani Snow Monkeys enjoy a secret, seedier existence. Here they are free to experience all the heady pleasures and vices the modern age has to offer. This includes, but is not limited to, unbridled drinking sessions while showing-off glamourous trinkets stolen from naive tourists.

And so the myth of the uncorrupted snow monkey is busted.

These seemingly clean-cut monkeys are dirtier than they may appear!
